Despite 4 World Cup matches last Saturday, over 120 Mormon Helping Hands turned out to pick up litter in the ravine or Barranca that runs from behind the CDM down towards Flamenca Beach commercial centre in Playa Flamenca.
The day was beautiful and the volunteers were in excellent form. An amazing amount of plastic, glass and other refuse was collected. This is the second such event in the last two months, The Leader newspaper exclusively reported on the clean-up in Aguamarina when 180 church members turned up to clean that beauty spot. On this Saturday’s clean-up almost double the amount of refuse was collected with less people.
Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) regularly give up their free-time to do community related service projects.
For example, last week, in conjunction with World Blood Donor Day nearly half a million Mormons donated blood.
Contrary to popular belief, Mormons see blood transfusions and blood donations as a vital part of preserving life in this modern world. Russell M. Nelson (94), the current prophet and president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a well-known heart surgeon.
Mormons are encouraged to donate blood as often as possible.
Due to the hot summer weather the next clean-up will probably only take place in late September, after the dedication of their beautiful new building in Los Alcazares near exit 786 on the AP7 on the 15th September.
Saturday’s clean-up event was organized in conjunction with Sofia Alvarez, the hard-working councillor for tourism and her well-organized assistant Fermin Gonzales who provided “Bocadillos” and water for the clean-up crew on behalf of the town hall. Thanks also to Los Cucalos restaurant in Los Dolses who prepared the lovely food.
