The Civil Guard has hunted down a driver who was traveling on the AP-7 at 200 kilometres per hour. The man, 48 years old and from Belgium, exceeded the speed limit by more than 80 km/h, and now faces penalties that could include three to six months in prison.
According to Benemérita in a statement, the man was stopped on February 18, near Orihuela Costa, at point 767.2 of the motorway, in the direction of Alicante, at a speed control checkpoint installed by the Torrevieja Traffic Detachment.
While carrying out these checks, the agents recorded a car that was traveling at high speed and that greatly exceeded the limits authorised for this road. After stopping the driver, the man was charged with alleged crime against road safety.
The agents have now handed the matter over to the Court of Instruction number 1 of Orihuela with the driver facing penalties, ranging from prison of 3 to 6 months, a very hefty fine or community service of 31 to 90 days. In either case, he will be banned from driving for a period between one and four years.
The Civil Guard reminds us that inappropriate or excessive speed, along with distractions and alcohol consumption, represents one of the main causes of traffic accidents. “This behaviour significantly increases the probability of making human errors behind the wheel, putting the road safety of all road users at risk,” they said.
