Mil Palmeras is to have a sludge composting plant. The public sanitation company Epsar, plans to establish the complex on a plot adjacent to the Pilar de la Horadada treatment plant, located near the municipal area of Lo Monte. The project has a favourable environmental impact declaration and has already passed the public exhibition process.
The objective of composting is to produce compost for use in agriculture, gardening and the fight against desertification and, therefore, contributing towards sustainable development.
The sludge will be drawn from the treatment plants of Pilar de la Horadada, San Miguel de Salinas, Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa.
The new facility aims to annually process more than 20,000 tons of sludge and more than 1,000 tons of pruning remains, converting them into 11,000 tons of product usable as an organic sustenance in crop fields.
The project dates back to 2012, but its drafting was not put out to tender until 2017. The winner was the UTE formed by Aquamabiente and Pavasal, but the contract has been in the possession of the Generalitat since 2021.
Former president Puig announced in February this work among other investments that he was going to carry out Epsar for 1.5 million euros.
