Doctor Jorge Alió is featured at number 12 in ‘The Ophthalmologist Power List 2023’ ranking of the 100 most influential and inspiring ophthalmologists in the world, once again being the only Spanish doctor present.
The professor in Ophthalmology at the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) of Elche has improved his position from last year, thus acknowledging his scientific and research career. It is the sixth time that the Alicante doctor has been featured in this classification carried out annually by the prestigious English journal The Ophthalmologist, which celebrates its tenth anniversary.
“Every year, we receive hundreds of nominations at The Ophthalmologist from all over the world. We catalogue and filter this very long list of nominations and pass it on to an objective and diverse jury”, the editors of the medical publication explain, which includes the hundred professionals with the highest international impact in the field of ophthalmology.
Since its first edition, Dr. Alió has been a prominent figure in the journal, considered one of the most important in the sector for analysing and evaluating the work and reputation of the most influential people in ophthalmology.
A select panel of judges made up of fifteen world-renowned ophthalmologists has been in charge of reflecting the diversity of specialties. “They have been responsible for drawing up the final list of names independently and ensuring that the list always reflect the latest efforts in clinical care, research and business”, as explained by The Ophthalmologist, which this year will launch its new program ‘Power List Rising Stars’ to connect the community of physicians recognized for their excellence with those professionals who are at the beginning of their career.
The presence of the founder of the Vissum ophthalmological clinics (Miranza Group) in ‘The Ophthalmologist Power List 2023’ is a new milestone in his long and fruitful career. Jorge Alió already has a long history of recognitions, as shown in the Forbes list of the 100 best doctors in Spain, of which he is one of the six Spanish ophthalmologists mentioned.
In addition, he was featured in an article in the magazine Journal of Refractive Surgery as the author with the most articles published in the field of refractive surgery in the world, being also the most cited author in the field. Also, according to a study by the academic publisher Elsevier he is one of the most influential researchers internationally.
Among the distinctions he has received, Professor Alió has received the gold medal from the Intraocular Implant and Refractive Society of India (IIRSI) and the Alberto Sols Award for the ‘Best Research Work’.
Notably, he was recently named a full member of the Spanish Association of Doctors Writers and Artists (ASEMEYA), which he shares with celebrities as important as Santiago Ramón y Cajal and Gregorio Marañón.
He has also been one of the best valued doctors as voted by the patients of Top Doctors Spain, thus certifying his excellence and professionalism in obtaining the maximum score from patients.
The extensive career of Jorge Alió has led him to be the creator of the concept of Microincisional Cataract Surgery (MICS), as well as a pioneer in the area of Multifocal Intraocular Lenses (IOL) and in refractive surgery with excimer laser and in phakic Multifocal Intraocular Lenses (IOL), with over 55,000 eye operations during his professional career. Furthermore, he is one of the leading international experts in keratoconus, performing a novel pilot research on advanced stem cell therapy.
Currently, Dr. Alió is a member of the board of directors of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS) and Expertscape ranks him in the first position of five ophthalmological areas: refractive surgery, intraocular lens implantation, ophthalmic surgical procedures, intraocular lenses and presbyopia.
