It has been confirmed that Los Montesinos will have one of the first fixed ecoparks to be installed in the region. The Vega Baja Sostenible Consortium, the waste management group made up of the 27 municipalities of the region, has accepted from the Los Montesinos City Council the transfer of a 3,585 square metre plot that will be used for the new waste management facility.
This new ecopark will allow more than 4,900 residents from municipality to deposit bulky and polluting household waste, such as furniture, mattresses or large electronic devices. It will be located in the Levante II Industrial Park on the outskirts of the town.
According to the Consortium president, Francisco Cano, the new installation is expected to be ready before the end of the year. It will be one of three fixed recycling facilities that the region will have, along with Dolores, which has already given up the land, and Almoradí. “In this way, we will improve the service and promote recycling among the population, preventing furniture and belongings from being abandoned on public roads,” said Cano.
The investment, amounts to 146,346 euros per year
The governing board of the Vega Baja Sostenible Consortium has approved the highest budget in recent years for 2024, a total of 22 million euros to manage the 185,000 tons of garbage generated by the 27 municipalities of Vega Baja.
The budget includes the construction of the first three fixed ecoparks in the region, and three mobile ecoparks. There are a total of 12 fixed ecoparks planned for the Vega Baja, five of which are expected to be built this year.
Two of the new ecoparks are scheduled to be established in Orihuela, one in the city and another on the coast. The City Council announced last September that it will transfer two plots of land to the Consortium, one in the Puente Alto industrial estate and another on the coast, in the Lomas de Cabo Roig EQ1 Sector, next to the plot that currently serves as a temporary parking lot for the rubbish trucks.
These facilities were expected to be ready for next summer. However, they have not yet been included in the budget, as the Orihuela Council has not yet provided the land for their construction.
