The number of passengers arriving in Spain from international airports in June reached close to 9.1 million, showing a remarkable ten per cent increase compared to the same month in 2022, data provided by Spain’s official tourism website, Turespana, have revealed.

“We continue with some extraordinary data that demonstrate the growth potential of tourism in Spain, which translates into higher income and an increase in the number of workers in the tourism sector. For the remainder of the year the forecasts are extraordinary,” the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Héctor Gómez, pointed out in this regard.
During June of this year, Spain experienced an overall increase in passenger arrivals from all the main countries. Notably, 55.4 per cent of all passengers came from the European Union, showing a significant rise of +7.8 per cent.
When comparing these figures to the data from the previous year, certain markets stood out with remarkable growth rates. Poland emerged as the market with the highest increase, soaring by +37.0 per cent. Following closely behind were Portugal and Italy, with impressive growth rates of +19.7 per cent and +15.4 per cent, respectively.
Based on data from Turespana, in June 2023, the United Kingdom played a significant role in generating passenger arrivals in Spain, contributing to 25.1 per cent of the total.
This growth had a positive impact on all communities in Spain, but it was particularly notable in the Balearic and Canary Islands. These two regions were the chosen destinations for a substantial portion of the UK-originating travellers, accounting for 28.0 per cent and 20.6 per cent of the total UK passengers, respectively.
Passenger Arrivals From Germany Saw a Decrease in June
Passenger arrivals from Germany, making up 14.5 per cent of the total, declined slightly by -0.3 per cent.
Furthermore, 9.1 per cent of the total passenger flow in June came from Italy, displaying an impressive year-on-year growth of +15.4 per cent.
As for France, it accounted for 7.5 per cent of all passengers in June, demonstrating a noteworthy expansion of +5.9 per cent compared to the previous year. Passengers arriving from the Netherlands represented 4.8 per cent of the total, experiencing a modest increase of +2.7 per cent.
Balearic Islands Recorded Most Arrivals in June 2023
The group of six autonomous communities with the highest number of arrivals, representing 96.9 per cent of the total, experienced impressive growth of +9.7 per cent. Among them, the Balearic Islands stood out as the community with the most arrivals, making up 22.8 per cent of the total. Following closely were Madrid with 20.4 per cent and Catalonia with 20.0 per cent of the total arrivals.
Among these top six communities, the Valencian Community recorded the highest year-on-year growth at +14.5 per cent. On the other hand, Madrid had the highest share of arrivals from traditional companies, accounting for 40.6 per cent of such arrivals. Catalonia experienced the most substantial growth compared to the same month in the previous year, with +25.3 per cent.
In terms of low-cost airline traffic, the Balearic Islands led with the highest share of arrivals at 26.3 per cent. Catalonia followed closely with 22.1 per cent and the Valencian Community experienced a substantial increase of +15.6 per cent.
