We have featured the fact that new road signs will be introduced in Spain in 2023, and we now have the definitive list of how those changes will be implemented in the second half of this year, when the current Catalogue of Road Signs will be updated.
The new signs that will be extended in the road network of Spain will be gradually incorporated, and the Royal Decree which sets them into law is foreseen to enter into force mid-year 2023.
As well as some new roads signs, others will undergo a radical design change, some will be adapted to the new times and forms of mobility, and others will end up disappearing.
It is important to know how to identify them and become familiar with them so that they do not catch us by surprise. We will show you the new and changed road signs, and explain their meaning.
What are the changes?
New road signs
S-1b: Indicates the beginning of a multilane road.
S-45: Bike lane. Presence of bike lanes in urban areas.
S-46: Pedestrian crossing shared with cyclists.
R-118: Prohibits the circulation of electric scooters.
R-119: Prohibits the circulation of electric scooters and bicycles.
R-120: In accesses to Low Emission Zones (ZBE). It will prohibit the entry of certain vehicles based on their environmental label (B, C, ECO or 0 Emissions).
R-420: Existence of a road reserved for electric scooters. Obligation for these vehicles to circulate exclusively through it.
R-421: The road is mandatory for electric scooters and bicycles. Sharing its use.
R-422: Obliges drivers of Personal Mobility Vehicles (electric scooters, bicycles or unicycles) to get off it and continue on foot until the signal be annulled.
Road signs that have changed their design:
STOP: Appears with a larger typeface, thus improving its visibility.
P-8: Danger due to a level crossing without barriers. Updated with more modern design of the locomotive.
P-20a: Proximity to a pedestrian crossing. It replaces the previous one, square and blue.
P-22a: Passage for cyclists, warning of the danger due to the existence of a passage for cyclists. (Supersedes 22b).
P-24a: Presence of animals on the road. Before represented by a deer. Now a wild boar takes its place, since it is a more common animal in these areas.
P-33: Section of reduced visibility. Now a car will be seen entering a zone of reduced visibility.
P-21: Danger due to the proximity of a place frequented by children. The order of the figures is altered, with the female leading.
Mobility and road traffic are constantly changing according to social changes.
In addition to the search for a more sustainable and fair mobility for all road users, new infrastructures emerge, habits and preferences change, and new challenges are recognised. This is the thinking behind these changes.
