On Wednesday night. 10th of May to be precise, the Emerald Isle played host to 140 people out for dinner and some entertainment…Stevie Spit has just finished his warm up spot and everyone is tucking into their fish. When one customer stands up and says “I bet your all worried”
Then another lady across the room, also eating, stands up and says “We were worried” Then a third stands up and joins the first two in chorus. “We’re worried about Vaginas”
So that’s how this started – talking to women about their vaginas, Doing vagina interviews, which became The Vagina Monologues. It’s the experience of over two hundred women, older women, young women, married women single women, lesbians, corporate professionals, sex workers, African American women, Hispanic women, Asian women, Caucasian women, Jewish women.
At first women were reluctant to talk. They were a little shy, but once they got going, you couldn’t stop them. Women secretly love to talk about their vaginas. They get very excited….The Vagina Monologues was a way to bring some awareness to cancer and encourage women to examine themselves regularly.
It was also a chance to raise a few euros for two cancer charities. The AACC and MABS. Two very different charities. The First AACC which targets Prevention and The Second MABS which specialises in the care of people that have cancer already. The evening raised €700 which was split equally in two, with both charities getting €350 each.
