- Two dead and one seriously injured on AP7 in Pilar de la Horadada
Two men have died in a traffic accident that occurred on Tuesday morning around 10:15 am on the AP-7 motorway close to Pilar de la Horadada. A 23-year-old man has also been seriously injured in the same incident, as reported by the Emergency Coordination Centre.
The emergency services were quickly on the scene with paramedics from the SAMU unit only able to confirm the death of two men.
The injured man has been taken to the University Hospital of Torrevieja where he is said to be in a serious condition.
The accident involved a car and a van which, according to information provided by the firefighters, are said to have suffered a ‘head on’ collision, with one of them inexplicably, travelling along the motorway in the wrong direction.
Local Spanish newspaper INFORMATION says it can confirm, that one of them, driven by a 76-year-old man, was driving in the opposite direction to the direction of travel after having accessed the highway from a roundabout popularly known as “the one with the monolith” on the border of the province of Alicante with the Region of Murcia.
He travelled a stretch of almost two kilometres in the opposite direction until the collision. A violent impact that threw both vehicles several metres up into the air.
Firefighters from the Provincial Consortium were also despatched to the scene of the accident to carry out rescue and release tasks.
On arriving at the scene, the firefighters removed the two dead men, one from each of the vehicles, while the injured man, according to sources, “was already out of the vehicle in which he was traveling and being treated by medical staff.”
The Fire Consortium has employed an entire team from the Torrevieja park made up of a sergeant, a corporal and 7 firefighters.
The Guardia Civil Traffic Unit regulated traffic during the emergency work, and is now investigating the causes of the accident and how the impact occurred on a road that has a central reservation and two lanes in each direction of travel.
Only three weeks earlier there was another serious accident with a death and eight injuries on the AP-7 as it passed through Pilar de la Horadada, although at the northern end of the road as it travelled through the municipal area, near the Dehesa de Campoamor.
