Orihuela supporters took to the streets on Sunday evening to celebrate the promotion of their team from Tercera to Segunda B. The fans had to wait until almost midnight to receive their heroes at the Gabriel Miró roundabout, as they travelled back following their 2-1 victory at Silla in the very final game of the campaign.
The city center became a huge party upon the arrival of the players, together with the more than 400 supporters who travelled to Silla to cheer on their team.
The area was flooded with fans wearing yellow t-shirts and scarves as the Players, coaches and managers climbed onto a stage erected by the City Council, from where they addressed almost 1000 fans.
And yet it was a promotion that they gained in only the final 15 minutes of the game, having gone behind to relegated Silla who took the lead though Pau Palacín, in the 66th minute.
However, goals from Ayo (76) and Nacho Muñoz (84) turned the game around, securing the title and automatic promotion for Orihuela who finished just 2 points ahead of second placed Atzeneta UE, following their 2-1 win at Elche.
The Oriolanos culminated their successful campaign, in which they have remained leaders for 25 consecutive weeks. They moved into first place after week 5 and have held on to that position until they secured the championship on Sunday, supported by over 400 travelling fans.
