THE Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) has taken action to seal pipes together with the disconnection of irregular irrigation in Campo de Cartagena.
The area disconnected and sealed is 1,164.97 hectares from the coastal lagoon comprising of 8,500 illegal hectares detected in Campo de Cartagena.
In a statement, the CHS details that the environmental officers of the Confederation have initiated the disconnection of several plots as a result of the culmination of sanctioning files.
The seals and disconnections of the plots, without the right to distribution networks, affect an area of 96.97 hectares, which began in February.
Voluntary disconnections have been carried out on 1,068 hectares, at a time when the CHS plans to continue with subsidiary executions.
Work was undertaken ahead of a visit of the delegation from the Petitions Committee of the European Parliament.
In 2021 it was announced Murcia farmers would receive €7m to modernise irrigation equipment.
At that time the Confederation of Business Organisations of Cartagena said local farmers would suffer from not being allowed to water their farmlands under a law prohibiting irrigation to prevent nitrates and other chemicals running off into the lagoon.
For the Campo de Cartagena irrigation community, with land in Torre Pacheco, Murcia, Cartagena, San Javier and San Pedro del Pinatar, €3.3m was used to support projects to reuse water from the San Javier treatment plant.
€2.6m was used for Torre Pacheco and Los Alcázares, reaching 12,144 hectares of 1, 530 farmers.
The Campo de Cartagena irrigation community covers an area of over 42,000 hectares extending over the municipalities of Cartagena, Fuente Àlamo, Los Alcázares, Murcia, San Javier, San Pedro del Pinatar, Torre Pacheco and Pilar de la Horadada.
