The Laboratory of Climatology at Alicante University issued a weather warning on Monday – after unexpected torrential downpours hit the Vega Baja regions.
“We have some surprises of unexpected rain in the Vega Baja areas,” a spokesperson from the Labotorio de Climatologia Universidad de Alicante said.
“The rain that came was not expected at this time. There is an intensity of rain, especially by Orihuela.
“The rain is moving rapidly, from south-west to north-north-east,” they added.
Torrential rain, thunderstorms and hailstorms hit Los Montesinos at noon, and areas of Albatera, La Marina, La Marquesa, Los Balcones, and Villamartin with up to 3 litres of rain falling per square metre at Los Locos Beach in Torrevieja.
Los Alcazares and Santiago de la Ribera were also hit in Murcia. As the storms passed, the sun broke through early afternoon.
