Once again, Mojácar Council, in co-ordination with Almería Provincial Council, organised an annual summer walk along the path of La Mena. As part of the regional ‘Rutas y Senderos 2019’ programme, it was a chance for locals as well as visitors to enjoy a fun activity all together.
Led by two official guides and backed by members of the Civil Protection, 50 people took part in the “easy/medium” 10km Mena-Macenas coastal route which takes in some stunning sea views along the way.
It also passes through some strategic points that reveal the area´s economic and social history going back to the mining past, with signs of the tracks left by the muleteers and iron transporters, as well as indications of the Muslim age and the Mediterranean coast defences. All this area, too, is surrounded by unique fauna and flora such as the “limonium estevei”, an endemic species to the area which is in danger of extinction.
Taking part also, were the town´s Sports and Citizen Security Councillors, Ana Garcia and María Luisa Pérez, with everyone making regular stops along the way to hear information about the most emblematic points from the guides and, enjoy some pit stop refreshments provided by the Council.
Ana García was keen to mention how popular this event has become and, is now one the most popular in the annual sports programme put together by the Council or in its collaboration with the Provincial Council.
Mojácar’s Rutas y Senderos 2019 event was in even greater demand that last year´s Full Moon Walk, showing the interest in this type of inclusive sport, one that can be enjoyed at home or away with friends and all the family. It is an activity that is on the rise in many parts of the country which in addition contributes to promotion of tourism and hospitality.
Mojácar has a range of walks including the Las Huertas path, with interesting historical spots along the way and its beautiful views of the ancient old town of “Mojacar la Vieja. Alternatively, the Marina de la Torre to Mojácar Pueblo route connects the modern hotel zone and golf area to the Old Town, passing the mouth of the river Aguas, where you can watch out for a variety of waterfowl and amphibians.
