The 18 taxi registered taxi drivers in San Javier will receive 180,000 euros from the Murcia Community in compensation for their loss of earnings following the closure of the airport.
Murcia says that as one of the services most affected by the closure, the sum is provided as a support subsidy in order to promote the professional activity within the sector and the contribution that it provides to tourism in the municipality.
The objective is to encourage the reorganization of the sector, to better enable its adaptation to the current situation and contribute to the diversification of its activity within the Mar Menor and the surroundings of La Manga as the drivers respond to the new challenges that will arise with the arrival of the tourist season.
The Minister of Development and Infrastructure, Patricio Valverde, and the Mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo, signed yesterday the collaboration agreement that includes a series of actions to support the sector and prevent their interests from being affected.
Patricio Valverde, the Minister of Development and Infrastructure, said that San Javier is a municipality with a great future, so “we continue to offer our full support to taxi professionals to undertake, expand services and also to make it easier to offer and expand.” Among the proposed actions will be the creation of a computer application, available for mobile phones, which will be promoted to facilitate the direct contracting of their services from the telephone of potential clients.
