Manchester City, the champions of the previous Premier League, seemed to have bagged the title once again, after the vicious victory over Everton on 7th February 2019 at the Goodison Park Stadium. Achieving a massive jump to the top of the table, Man City fans chanted “Jurgen is cracking” full time, celebrating them surpassing Liverpool and signifying that Jurgen Klopp doesn’t really stand a chance against Man City.
Although Liverpool and Man City had 62 points each at the time, Man City had the advantage on goal difference as they played one more game than Liverpool. They regained their typical charm and were back on top for the first time since the 8th of December.
This eventually became a massive disappointment for Liverpool and its fans as they have never once won the Premier League title and are constantly striving hard to do so. In a recent interview with Sportingbet, Joleon Lescott, the former English professional footballer, confirms the fears of many Liverpool fans as he mentions: “I expect Manchester City to go on to win the Premier League. It is interesting that they’ve been able to overtake Liverpool so quickly. I don’t think it’s a surprise that Man City has won the games they have, but rather that Liverpool has dropped points in recent weeks”.
Lescott did seem to have a point as Liverpool’s previous games didn’t represent the Reds usual allure. After drawing many games to teams like Everton (0-0), Manchester United (0-0), West Ham (1-1), and Leicester (1-1), Liverpool found them-selves behind Manchester City.
However, recently it looks like the Reds have made a complete turnaround and leave Man City in their dust. They prolonged their undefeated premier league run with their magnificent 5-0 victory over Watford. Both Sadio Mane and Virgil Van Dijk scored twice displaying their top-class football that is expected from them.
It seems Lescott may be eating his words, “Earlier on in the season, the title could have been Liverpool’s to lose but they threw the opportunity away with a bad run of games where they didn’t achieve what they should have down. It’s now in Manchester City’s hands and I don’t expect them to let it slip”.
Nonetheless, the Reds have managed to regain their former premier league glory, and potentially appear to be the Premier League champions this year. A change would be welcomed, as Manchester City have won it already last year.
