Football celebrities from the UK flew into Spain last week to help celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Los Amigos de Mazarron FC Annual Gala Evening and Dinner in support of Mazarron Football Club.
The festivities started with a Race Night at the Club House, Camposol on Saturday 23rd March sponsored by Camposol Property Sales. Comedian Gary Marshall acted as compere for the evening and guests included Premier League referee Mike Dean and former England International Tony Currie.
They were joined on Sunday by more celebrities as former players Alex Stepney (Manchester United), Steve Daley (Wolves and Manchester City), Jan Molby (Liverpool) and Steve Kindon (Burnley and Wolves) flew in to attend a lunch at La Sienna Restaurant in Mazarron before watching Mazarron’s home game against SFC Minerva which ended in a 0-0 draw.
On Monday 25th March there was a Celebrity Golf Tournament at Camposol Club de Golf at which 80 players took part including Mike Dean, Tony Currie, Alex Stepney, Steve Kindon, Steve Daley and former West Ham centre half Alvin Martin. The competition was won by the Condado de Alhama Golf Club “B” team and the trophy was presented to the winning team by Angela Skinner from the sponsors Tramway Financial Management.
The main event came on the following day with the Gala Dinner at the Hotel la Cumbre in Puerto de Mazarron which was attended by 210 guests. The evening was again sponsored by Ibex Insurance and the Club House Camposol. Ex players Chico Hamilton, Peter Reeves and Lawrie Madden joined the other football celebrities along with Mazarron FC President Ruben Martinez Collado and his wife Victoria.
After a splendid dinner, Master of Ceremonies Gary Marshall interviewed a number of the football legends who recounted details of their playing careers. There was the usual auction of sporting memorabilia and the evening was rounded off with music and dancing to the sounds of Woody.
At the end of a memorable few days, a record sum of €8,000 was raised for Mazarron Football Club bringing the total raised by the Gala events to €40,000 over the ten years.
