Mojácar recently held an official presentation for this weekend’s 14th Baja Almanzora Rally that kicks off the Spanish Championship, running through Mojácar, Garrucha, Vera and Cuevas del Almanzora.
At the presentation representing Mojácar Council were the Mayor, Rosmari Cano, with Ana García and Emmanuel Agüero, her Councillors for Sports and Tourism, respectively. Also there from the organization team were; Antonio Segura, President of the Escudería Andina Racing, Emilio Viudez, Committee Chairman, Manuel Vidal, Race Organiser and, Ricardo Escudero, from Mojácar’s Servigroup hotel chain.
The Mayor expressed her delight that Mojácar had been chosen for starting point of this competition, which is of great importance to this particular sport, as well as to tourism in the area. It will be a chance for the many participants and its followers to spend some time in the town at a period before the busy tourist season begins, helping the fight against seasonality.
Antonio Segura then took the opportunity to thank Mojácar Council, as well as Servigroup for all their assistance with the accommodation and facilities that had been arranged for everyone involved. He also pointed out that the race is equal to the well-known Paris-Dakar competition, with many of the regular participants now eager to start testing their recent team improvements.
This Spanish Championship is made up of six events, this one being first in the region, with a competition route of 450 kms, involving the maximum number of 75 drivers who come from all over the world to be on the start line.
It is estimated that 500 members of the organization will attend, along with many spectators. An estimated one and a half million euros is expected to be added to the local economy on accommodation, meals, fuel and additional items that are typically required during an event involving such a large number of people.
Everyone present stressed the status of this upcoming event where the world’s best rally drivers can be seen in action and, they are hoping for crowds to turn out to enjoy the weekend. They do, however, also wish to remind anyone out walking or living in the race areas to pay particular attention to any warning signs, as the circuit can be potentially very dangerous due to the speeds involved.
Antonio Segura and Emmanuel Agüero also took the opportunity to give out some advance news in the presentation about a unique, brand new 24 hour all-terrain endurance test in Mojácar scheduled for December, similar to the Le Mans 24 hour race but for off road vehicles.
