Thirty-nine members and two guests turned up to play a straightforward stableford competition at a course rarely visited these days by the society. It is quite likely that it may well not be visited at all next year unless it improves significantly over its condition on the day and charges a price reflecting the quality (all agree the layout design is great) of the course.
Those who stayed away clearly knew something the majority didn’t. A front nine containing some very uneven painted (!!) greens, semi-rough made up of clumps of weed grasses that hid half of a ball settling on dirt, and large numbers of bare patches on fairways didn’t enthuse those attempting to create a half-decent round.
However, more than half-decent rounds were put together by some. Miracles happen!! Keven Mitchell in Gold and Paddy Diskin in Silver both recorded 37 points, the latter taking the day’s best return on count back. Sixteen members beat 30 points.
The day’s winning results, by category and in reverse order, were the following:
Bronze Category: 4th Bob Eyland (31 on CB), 3rd Wenche Westburg (32), 2nd Mike Jordan (33) and 1st Ken Flaherty (35)
Silver Category: 4th Chris Wren (32), 3rd Steve Hart (33), 2nd Phil de Lacey (36) and 1st Paddy Diskin (37)
Gold Category: 4th Bill Morrison (32), 3rd Roger Webb (33), 2nd Colin Smith (34) and 1st Keven Mitchell (37)
Nearest the pins: Hole 7 Norman Cahill, Hole 9 Mick Roscoe , Hole 14 Colin Smith, Hole 18 John Mellor
Abacus: Gary Beechey, Best Guest: Dave Alderdice (33)
