Buywise – tipped by The Leader – fell at the last of 22 fences in the Unibet Veterans Handicap 3 miles Chase at Sandown.
Buywise, trained by Evan Williams and ridden by Adam Wedge, progressed through the 17 runners’ field and was challenging subsequent winner Houblon Des Obeaux, when falling.
“He was staying on and had every chance of winning,” rued jockey Wedge.
“I think he’d have given the winner something to think about,” said unlucky Wedge.
Houblon Des Obeaux (7-1) finished ahead of Theatre Guide (14-1), On Tour (12-1) and Rock Gone (13-2).
The Leader each way tip Highland Acclaim (12-1) was beaten a neck in a photo finish behind Kodiline in the 3.25 race at Lingfield.
Capeland, Darius Des Bois, and Straight Right, tipped by The Leader, all finished second; with Tralee Hills finishing third.
