Mojácar got its Christmas calendar officially underway with the annual Dames in Spain Christmas Fair and Carol Concert held at the town’s Centro de Usos Multiples. It is a very traditional event that brings the local international community together, with a morning filled with the most popular carols and seasonal stories that can be heard all over the United Kingdom at this time of year.
It also provides the perfect setting to hold a charity fair, including a raffle where the prizes are gifts given generously by local establishments, with greater numbers collaborating with their support each year.
Mojácar’s Town Band, opened up the event with a selection of old and new typical Spanish carols. Carol Threlfall, speaking on behalf of The Dames in Spain, thanked everyone for coming along to support what is, one of their biggest fund raising events of the year to help various charities.
This year, donations were given to MACS, the Association that helps cancer patients and families, the carers’ support group, Stepping Stones and Equinac, another non-profit organisation that attends to marine creatures, mainly turtles, whales and dolphins.
The Dames President also thanked Mojácar’s Mayor, Rosmarí Cano and María Luisa Pérez, the Councillor assigned to the Mayor’s Office, who also helped out with translations when the donations were presented.
Mojácar Council works together with Mojácar’s Dames in Spain on many of the charitable activities they are involved in, which highlights the efforts made by the members from all institutions to collaborate and work together for the welfare of the area.
There are more than sixty, mostly British, women in Mojácar’s Dames in Spain Association, who for three decades have devoted a great deal of their time and efforts to organizing activities throughout the year with the aim of donating the proceeds to deserving causes.
