On Monday we played the team game 6x6x6. Four man teams with the best single score to count on each of the first six holes, two best on the next six and the best three scores over the final six.
With 88 points the winning team consisted of Olga Douglas, Marleen Billen, John Conway and John Shervell. Worthy of a mention in dispatches were John Conway’s heroics on the notoriously tricky par five 4th.
Having duffed his second shot into the veranka and taken the subsequent penalty, he played a great shot onto the green and rolled in the putt for par. Mind you, just as well John Shervell was amongst the winners, he can now afford to buy petrol for his buggy (which was abandoned on the 17th!) A very close competition with a number of teams only a couple of shots behind.
Wednesday was the sixth and final round in the series of the dreaded medal play. With a reversal in the family fortunes, first place went to Olga Douglas with a tremendous nett score of 66, beating husband Alan who was runner up with 68. In fact that’s the second consecutive nett 68 for Alan and he’s been runner up to a lady on both occasions.
Lindsay Forbes (playing off a six handicap) with 70 was third and Geoff Biggerstaff (one of our founder members) fourth with 73. Good scores to come in 5th and 6th were John Shervell with 74 and John Collins with75. Those lucky enough to win a share of the ‘2’s money were Peter Wickham, Brian Staines, Ulrika Barth and former member, but now a guest, Phil Harrington.
Having enjoyed a lunch at Falidu’s on the Thursday it was onto our much awaited ‘Ryder Cup’ England v Europe on Friday. Well, it couldn’t have been scripted any better. With the score at seven points each we’re just waiting on the last match and they came in with a half! So a draw 7.5 points each.
Worthy of a mention is Reg Akehurst who at one point was 5 down to Liz Robertson and managed to half his game. Mike Mahoney, who chipped in from 80 yards on the 15th went on to win his match against Brian Staines 2&1. I’m afraid yours truly lost 6&5 to very in form Heinz Lei. Both the captains, Dave Pulling for England and Lindsay Forbes for Europe won their games.
In the after match interviews Dave diplomatically said ‘’Congratulations to both teams on a fiercely contested match’’ whilst Lindsay replied with ‘’We was robbed, I hate losing to the English’’ (he’s Scottish by the way). A rematch is planned for the autumn.
