Stagestruck put on three performances last week at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio. From a Jack to a King’ was an original musical comedy script written by Stagestruck director Leigh Humphries. The show was set in the fictitious Hope pub in the East end of London. It was a huge success and the feedback from theatregoers was very positive. A number of people said it was the best Stagestruck show ever.
The audience laughed throughout the show but certain characters and scenes had the audience in stitches. One such character was Jean Speakman who played Ruth, a Nellie Pledge type character who mixes her words up with hilarious results. In addition, Maggie and Joan, the ladies of the night raised some titters with their over the top portrayal. The Peggy Mitchell style ‘Get out of my pub’ scene, complete with Eastender’s style ‘duff duff’ brought the house down as did Johnnie Bigg, the resident entertainer falling through the bar Delboy style.
The whole cast deserve praise for their portrayal of their characters and for their professionalism. The set, built by Don Payen went from a rundown pub in the first half to a bright, refurbished pub in the second half with some clever set building. Roger Scott and his team added atmosphere with skilful lighting, sound effects and taped recordings relating to the era during the blackouts hat were included to denote time shifts.
At the end of the Saturday evening performance, representatives of the Torrevieja Alzheimer’s Association took the stage to accept a cheque for 3500 euros. Further donations will be made to other local charities over the next month.
