This Friday Montgo played for the Oliva Nova Cup, sponsored by Oliva Nova. We were honoured to be joined by course manager Rafael Pedro who, unfortunately, could only join us for nine holes, but what an impressive nine holes that was. If he was a member of our society I imagine his drinks cabinet would fill up pretty quickly. Us remaining mere mortals, as always found the medal format slightly challenging with a few no returns recorded.
Those who brushed off the challenges of medal play to return winning scores were all boys this week, with not a single lady on the podium. I can hear them cheering still. All three positions were decided on countback as they all came in with the same score of net 71. Taking prime position Shaun O´Gorman shot a fabulous gross 77. In second place George Braddick shot 89 and third place with a gross 92 was our old captain, John Feek.
Initially John thought he was going home empty handed but following a stewards enquiry regarding an incorrect scorecard, his smile returned as he edged into 3rd and the prizes.
Although not on the podium it was a clean sweep for the girls on the three NTPS awarded. On the 3rd Gerian Van Ooijen landed just 4.32m from the pin; the 11th was taken by Sally Burrowes with just 2.25m and on the 16th Penny Barden hit to 3.06m. None of them sunk their putts so the two Montgo balls awarded went to Wolfgang Schuster and Nigel Cook.
A special birthday prize presented by Gordon Gleeson, went to our 14th placed player Neil Cumming. Something to do with 7 plus 7…not sure of the significance of that.
Two singles matches were also contested this week with George Braddick losing to Sally Cottrell 7/5. It wasn´t all cheers in the Cottrell house as Keith Cottrell lost to Terry Moore 3/1.
And finally congratulations go to Francien Knoops winner of our photo competition with picture No.1. This picture received 90% of the votes and will be put on to the website shortly. A big thank you to all those who took part and well done Francien.
Remember this week is our awayday at Font Del Llop and those attending should meet at Ondarra opposite Campbell Lamont´s shop, at 8.15 ready for an 8.30 departure. It’s a dress down Friday so you can wear any colour you like.
