PAPS (Protectora Animales Perros del Sol) is an independent shelter and registered charity for the rescue of abandoned and mistreated dogs, some from the streets, kill stations, other shelters, or from the owners who cannot keep them for whatever reasons.
Set up in 2009 by Yvonne Schallamach where a volunteer programme was set up, whereby the dogs would get walked a couple of times a week. Later, when Jose Sauras joined PAPS, they then rented their own land on the outskirts of El Mirador, San Javier, where kennels were built and the prepared land was made into a large free run, which can be closed off into 4 separate sections for the dogs. The dogs only go into the kennels at night. . A puppy run, and indoor hospital section were also built.
They receive NO official funding, money being raised by donations, sponsorship, fund raising and, hopefully adoption fees.
All the dogs on arrival are fully vaccinated, chipped, spayed/neutered, and get their passports. As only a small concern, the shelter houses 40/50 dogs, some unfortunately will live their lives here, until age or illness takes them, with vets bills, food, toys and beds provided for their comfort from the above funds!
Many dogs are adopted by other countries, which is costly and PAPS need volunteers for walking, cleaning and grooming, Wednesday/Fridays.
There is a monthly pamper day for ears, eyes, and nails, clipping if necessary, flea/tick drops when necessary and worming every 3 months.
Donations and funds are always needed, along with dry food and many other necessary items. Further information on our Facebook page Support abandoned dogs/PAPS Spain..
