On Saturday May 19th Age Concern Costa Blanca Sur celebrated their 20th anniversary. In 1998 the charity began in a small house in Los Balcones and since then has flourished becoming a household name here in Spain, as it is in the UK, for offering welfare services, help and support to the over 50’s.
Marking this momentous occasion a Gala Ball was held at the Masa Hotel, Torrevieja where 122 guests, made up from volunteers past and present, beneficiaries, members, guests from Romana and supporters. Notable guests included Elizabeth Bell, Vice Consul, Carmen Morate, Councillor for Charities, Carlos Gonzales, Councillor for Foreign Residents, Israel Munoz, Secretary to the Mayor.
Jose Manuel Dolon, Mayor of Torrevieja gave a heartwarming speech and presented a boat made of salt to Maureen Payne, President, of 10 years standing, of Age Concern. Special recognition was paid to Wilma Aitkenhead, Manager of the Torrevieja Charity shop. Wilma is a founder member and has given 20 years of service to the charity.
All guests at this red carpet occasion had their photograph taken on arrival by renowned local photographer Ken Taylor and then welcomed with a glass of cava before sitting down to a three course meal with wine.
Everyone who attended was given an Age Concern monogrammed pen as a memento of this extra special event. The evening entertainment began at 9.30pm with the fantastic Bella Luna providing all the music to dance to, and dance we did.
Age Concern continues it’s good work with the aid of so many willing volunteers who ensure people continue enjoying their life in Spain safe in the knowledge that when they need help, help is readily available and just a phone call away.
