A fire that originated in a Dolores scrapyard has completely destroyed between 60 and 80 vehicles while devastating ten thousand square meters of land, according to sources of the Provincial Fire Brigade on Monday. The fire burned with such intensity that it was necessary to mobilise a total of eight vehicles from the stations in Orihuela, Torrevieja, Crevillente and Elche.
The fire started at about 1.30 pm in the ‘Rebagliato’ scrapyard located on the road between Almoradí and Dolores. The flames originated in an area where there was a large accumulation of worn tyres through which it spread at great speed, generating a thick column of black smoke that was visible for miles around.
A spokesman for the fire brigade said that the outbreak had been stabilised by about 2.45 but firefighters were required to spend a further two hours cooling the area to ensure there was no further outbreak.
