Orihuela’s Councillor for Transport, Begoña Cuartero, has opened talks with a transport company, based in the city, to provide a bus service between Torremendo and Orihuela.
The intention is that the service provides two daily trips, departing in the morning from thevillage and returning in the afternoon.
The councillor is taking steps after learning of the withdrawal of the bus service between Orihuela with Pilar de la Horadada that passed through the hamlet of Torremendo, which is now left without any form of public transport.
The decision to remove the service was taken by the concessionaire company, Autocares La Inmaculada, and became effective last month. The company explained to the Council that the service was losing money as the number of daily travellers was less than the forecasts made at the time of contracting the service.
The line also linked Orihuela with the coast which is also without public transport to the city.
Those most affected are the residents of Torremendo who have voiced their indignation at the removal of the service according to the Cambiemos Orihuela spokesman, Karlos Bernabé. “Torremendo has an aging population who are now unable to travel by theiir own means to the city or to the Coast, for leisure, or more importantly, for their personal independence,” he said.
