Following the terrorist attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils, and following the re-issue of security advice from the National Security Office, the Mayor Jose Manuel Dolón (Los Verdes), has ordered the placement of 30 concrete bollards along the promenades of Vista Alegre, Libertad and Juan Aparicio.
The purpose, he said, is to increase the security along those walkways that are used on a daily basis by thousands of residents and visitors, and to make the whole area far better protected in the event of any similar terrorist attack.
The mayor accepts the fact that the blocks are quite ugly but he has said that they are simply a stopgap measure until such time as barriers that are more in line with the urban landscape and Torrevieja’s maritime facade can be provided.
Despite there being no specific threat in the area, the presence of Civil Guard and Local Police patrols, wearing bulletproof vests and armed with assault rifles and sub machine guns, has also been increased along the seafront and in many other strategic points of the city.
