Torrevieja has placed a small mountain outside the tourist office in the Paseo Vista Alegre formed by 1,200 kilos of salt.
The Councillor for Tourism and the Environment, Fanny Serrano, said that as the salt industry is one of the most important founding industries it is essential that it is promoted to visitors.
Torrevieja was once a tiny pueblo dependent on their white ‘gold;’ salt for their economic survival. The salt and the sea therefore became the two most important and inseparable factors in the lives of the local inhabitants, being surrounded by the famous salt lagoons of La Mata and Torrevieja.
Salt works and crafts form part of the heritage of Torrevieja and the Tourist Office has recently opened its doors to visitors wishing to know more about the salt industry or the first time in its history.
