The mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, presided over celebrations for Constitution Day on Tuesday which were held in Plaza del Carmen. The event was also attended by a number councillors as well as oriolanos and other local residents, all of who took part in the reading of articles of the Magna Carta, the city charter
Bascuñana said that the articles still remain in force 38 years after the introduction of the Spanish Constitution in 1978 which was “the result of the consensus of different political forces that resorted to the single direction and the single objective: To have a free and democratic Spain.”
The mayor also reminded the gathering of the first president of the new Democratic Government, Adolfo Suárez, who shaped the country into what it is today.
Bascuñana then highlighted Article 14 of the Constitution, stating that “Spaniards are equal before the law, and no discrimination based on birth, race, sex, religion, opinion or any other personal or social condition or circumstance may prevail.”
