José Durá and José Ruso travelled to Brussels last wek as part of CEPESCA, the delegation of fishermen from Santa Pola who are protesting about EU fishing regulations.
They say that the introduction of legislation limiting fishing vessels to a maximum of 250 crustacean traps each in deep water trip is not manageable and would lead to the bankruptcy of many of the Santa Pola fleet.
They are asking that the current legislation limiting boats to 1500 traps be maintained. They say that they are able to show how, according to recent scientific reports the stock of this fish is in good condition at depths of between 140 and 560 meters, so that “it is not necessary to unbalance the socioeconomic sustainability of over one hundred families “.
