The new look Mazarron team were perhaps slightly unfortunate to lose by the only goal of the game scored in the 78th minute.
With only captain Juan Andreo from last year’s team in the starting line up, Mazarron made a bright start forcing an early corner following a long throw by Chino. Rubens’ shot from 25 yards out was just wide of the target and Mazarron’s defence was coping with anything the home team could throw at them.
As both sides settled down Ruben and Javi had shots just wide for Mazarron with Montecasillas’s main threat coming from corner kicks apart from a late first half long range effort which was well over the crossbar.
The second half began with Montecasillas looking more dangerous and an excellent free kick was just wide. Both sides were looking for the opening goal as play swung from end to end and Raul Torrano’s shot was saved by the Montecasillas keeper. At the other end Pablo saved another Montecasillas free kick and yet another long range effort sailed well over the bar.
Both sides made substitutions as Montecasillas started to control the game. A Mario Gomes free kick was just too high but the same player broke the deadlock with just 12 minutes remaining with a header which just, and only just, found its way over the goal line.
The goal spurred Mazarron into action and Raul headed over the bar from Moha’s cross. Substitute Andreo shot well over before the referee signalled the end of the first game of the season.
It was a game which could have gone either way but nevertheless an encouraging first performance by Mazarron.
