On a very hot and sultry Friday 29th July, Montgo Golf Society played a stableford competition at Oliva Nova. People must be getting fed up of reading how good Oliva Nova is, however the condition of the course was quite remarkable given the lack of rainfall and extremely high temperatures.
The downside is the amount of water they need to use to maintain these lush conditions, resulting in very soft fairways and a distinct lack of run on the ball especially around the fringes of the greens. Our sponsor of the day Robin Thatcher is a regular visitor to France, therefore we were treated to a wonderful array of French wines as prizes rather than the usual Spanish offerings.
In first place with a wonderful 40 points off 9 was Ros Fletcher, resulting in a new handicap of 8.2. In second place, also with a handicap cutting round of 37 points off 15.2 was John Feek, pushing Alan Webster in to third place with 36 points off 17,2. Fourth place went to Leslie Pritchard with 35 points of 27.7, pushing the unfortunate Denise Cooper and Ed Wallace out of the prizes on countback.
There were two nearest the pins on offer, with Sally Cottrell taking the 3rd and Colin Foster the 16th. Two 2’s were recorded on the day, scored by Nigel Siddall and John Feek. Finally we had one singles matchplay decided, resulting in George Braddick beating Mick Farmer 4 and 3.
Our next event in on Friday 12th of August, when we will be playing a medal competition at Oliva Nova sponsored by Neil and Glenys Cuming. Guests are welcome, subject to availability and a current handicap certificate, and should register by visiting the website at www.montgogolfsociety.net and completing an online booking form.
